K2 or Mount Godwin-Austen is 8,611 meters high and was first explored in 1856. K2 is located just a hundred miles from Mount Everest, on the border between China and Pakistan, in the Karakorum area. This is the second highest mountain in the world and one of the most dangerous for alpinists. The name of the mountain originates from Thomas Montgomerie, who during the inspection of mountain chains in the Karakorum area, marked this mountain peak with K2.
