In 1997, Martin Scorsese’s film Kundun revealed his stance on the conflict between China and Tibet. His sympathetic account of the early life of the 14th Dalai Lama led to the banning of Scorsese and his film. He never bothered to try and get back into China’s good books. In his movie The Departed, officials objected to the fact that one of the subplots was about stolen Chinese goods and in 2016 they were not impressed that he used the Taiwanese film industry to make the movie Silence.
